Qatar is an Arabic state on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It’s mostly surrounded by the Persian Gulf, and its capital city is called Doha. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world, thanks to its massive natural gas and oil reserves. It’s important not to confuse the Emirate of Qatar with the UAE (United Arab Emirates). The UAE is a federation of 7 Emirates, while Qatar is an independent state. The country is quite small — you can cross it from one side to the other in about an hour drive. Most of the country is desert. The population is about 2 million, and the majority lives in Doha. Around 80% are expats. The official language is Arabic, but English is widely spoken — so you won’t have any problems communicating.

Spend your first couple of days soaking in the charm of Doha.

  • Souq Waqif – Traditional Arabic Market, One of the most authentic and vibrant places in Doha. Souq Waqif is a traditional Arabic market with beautifully designed buildings, small shops selling local goods, the smell of bukhur (incense) in the air, and tons of cafés, shisha places, and souvenir shops. You can try traditional Middle Eastern food like harees, basbousa, and crispy raqaq. Prices for food are pretty low — I literally tried almost everything.
  • Msheireb Downtown – Modern Meets Traditional. Right next to Souq Waqif, Msheireb Downtown is a brand-new district built in a modern Arabic architecture style. There are plenty of cozy cafés and nice restaurants here. It’s a great place for a sunset walk. You can also catch a tourist tram that goes around the district.
  • West Bay – Skyscrapers & Beaches. Area with all the big skyscrapers along the coast. Most embassies, government offices, luxury hotels, and business centers are located here. Popular public beaches like West Bay Beach are here (entrance fee required). City Center Mall is nearby for snacks or a quick bite.
  • Doha Corniche – Scenic Waterfront. A long promenade connecting Souq Waqif to West Bay. Perfect for long walks, with stunning views of the bay. You can rent a traditional dhow boat ride here. Iconic Sheraton Grand Hotel (1970s) is visible from here.
  • Katara Cultural Village – Culture & Views. Beautiful mosques, amphitheatre, open beach, traditional-style architecture, and giant bird nests. Nearby Katara Hills park is perfect for a chill afternoon. Street food here is good!
  • The Pearl – European Vibes on an Island. Luxurious artificial island with European-style buildings, waterfront restaurants, and lots of cute areas to walk around. Great food, beautiful views, and nice places for coffee or dinner.
  • Old Doha Port & Box Park – Colorful & Artistic. Old Port has charming colorful buildings and is walkable. Box Park is made of upcycled metal cargo containers turned into cafés and shops. A fun, artsy place to hang out.
  • Lusail – New and Still Growing. Developing city connected to Doha. Festivals, concerts, and events bring life to the area. Marina Promenade and Place Vendôme Mall are worth visiting.

  • Mall of Qatar - A huge mall with tons of local and international brands. Great for a full day of shopping and entertainment.
  • Doha Festival City - Massive shopping mall with all popular brands. Includes Snow Dunes, a small indoor winter park with real snow.
  • Place Vendôme - Personal favorite. Like a palace with elegant interiors, dancing fountains, and a bright glass-domed food court. Super stylish.
  • Villaggio Mall - Mall with an indoor canal for gondola rides and Doha’s only ice rink.

Best place to try local food is at Souq Waqif with street food stands and benches where you can sit and watch market life.

Perfect for a 1–2 day escape. Infrastructure is minimal, so pack well or join a guided tour.
