Why I use “we” instead of “you”.

I thought about my target audience and decided that the first-person “we” feels more inclusive for the journey that I’m bringing people on. It acknowledges that I’m on this journey too, I learn at the same time “you” do.

Conventional wisdom has us using the second person “you” as a way of engaging them audience, to direct focus on the reader. It feels like I’m setting myself above the reader. “You” seems to be divisive in this case.

It’s difficult to do consistently. I have made “you” a habit, one which I need to break. Until then, it’s an extra step in the editing process.

So my question to my audience: is it working? Do we feel more included, or have you not even noticed?
