Yesterday I wrote about the reaction to a politician’s suggestion that we grow more produce domestically. A suggestion that would have been applauded coming from a sustainability campaigner or environmentalist. Because it was made by a staunch Brexiteer, people lost their shit.
When did we stop listening to the content of what people say? When did we start dismissing people entirely because they don’t share all of our opinions?
What is the future of debate if we attack instead of listening?
I was reminded of this whilst watching Winterwatch. I know people who disagree with one presenter’s opinions so vehemently that they won’t watch the show… even though the show’s content is exactly what they are into. They deny themselves an enjoyable and educational experience to spite someone who probably doesn’t even care.
I’m guilty of this too, so I intend to challenge this behaviour when I catch it.
